The music that means a lot to me which has always been my go-to song whether its at home or in the car or when i work is Billie Eilish’s “Everything I Wanted,” which is a song that has a very deep meaning.  You can read the full lyrics here on AZ Lyrics or listen to it on YouTube.

Background on Billie Eilish:

Before we get into the song, Billie Eilish has been Known for her amazing voice and lyrics that some of us can relate to in different sort of ways. Billie joined the music industry as a teenager and very quickly became a global sensation. Her songs often have personal and societal issues, making her music a perfect to relate to and you can feel it which a lot of artists aren't able to do.

Why This Song?

I chose “Everything I Wanted” because it speaks to the experiences of being celebrity and the often-overlooked struggles that accompany it. This song takes me back to the times when I felt misunderstood and reminds me of the importance of having supportive relationships in our lives.

Lyric Analysis:

  • Speaker: The lyrics are delivered from Billie’s perspective, which gives the listeners how she feels, her thoughts and fears. 

  • Purpose: The song is a reflection on fame and the realization that it doesn’t always bring happiness and many celebrities go through a lot even though they have money fame and many other things. Billie discusses her feelings of isolation and fear, even though she achieved what she always wanted but she talks about how she doesn't feel happy.

  • Audience: it's for anyone that are struggling or struggling with their mental health because in the lyrics she talks about she accomplished everything but ask herself "If I knew it all then, would I do it again? Would I do it again?". also, it expresses the weight of reality vs expectation.

  • Context: it written based on modern society on how people are always watching and is always in need to fulfill their need otherwise you will lose your fame. It also shows young artist of how people are quick to judge, and that fame didn't make her as happy she has always thought it would.

  • Feelings: Bille in her lyrics and when she sings, she expresses the fear that she has about the public perceiving her as well as her close relationships that she has in her personal life.

  • Messages: The song sends a very powerful message about of having someone who understands and supports you, as highlighted in the line, “As long as I’m here, no one can hurt you.”

Tone Analysis:

The overall tone of “Everything I Wanted” has melancholic tone as well as some parts she emphasis on and the breath she takes lets the lyrics settle in, which makes the song reinsuring and comforting you can see those shift when Billie shows gratitude for her and supports him as well as how family plays a critical role of familial bonds in navigating personal crises.
